| trying to twist it off counter clockwise. Twisting the nut both ways, doubles the chances of breaking the joint loose. As a nut or bolt is tightened down, their mating surfaces are often "smeared" into a granular structure. It is often easier to break the seized joint by going with the grain of the smeared metal, as opposed to against the it. Once the joint is broken loose, a small cavity is created within the joint which in turn may be expanded upon. At the same time, this little bit of back and forth movement makes it easier for the penetrant to work its way into the threads. gordo
